How to Take Care of Your Jewellery
One of the most common questions asked by customers is how to take care of their jewellery. This guide should help preserve your jewellery so that it gleams and sparkles like new for many years.
Gold Jewellery
Gold jewellery with or without gemstones can easily be cleaned with boiling water, washing up liquid and household ammonia put into a pot which you will only use for cleaning your jewellery. Whilst the solution is hot get tweezers to hold the jewellery firmly in place and with a soft toothbrush gently scrub the item then leave to soak in the solution for about 10 to 20 minutes. After this time with tweezers carefully pick up the jewellery and rinse under warm clean water and leave to air dry on a clean towel.
For extra shine, use a microfiber cloth to wipe the piece of jewellery never use kitchen paper or tissues as it might leave tiny scratches that, over time, will dull the finish of your item.
This method of cleaning gold jewellery won’t stop your white gold jewellery from tarnishing yellowish over time as this is due to wear and tear and also the acidity in your skin. For this, you would need to post into David Ashley or book an appointment to leave your item with our trained professionals who can re-polish your item and dip the piece of jewellery into a solution called rhodium where electricity is passed through the liquid to restore its white colour.
Jewellery with gemstones need extra care when cleaning; for example, although diamonds are the strongest gemstone if two diamonds were to rub against each other they could leave a scratch or worst if in a solution with other gemstones they could also damage them very easily as other gemstones are not as strong.
The above method does not work on pearl jewellery as this needs to be done by a trained professional. If you need this done, please send via post into David Ashley or book an appointment to leave your item with our trained professionals who will professionally clean and restring your item.

Platinum Jewellery
Platinum jewellery with or without gemstones like gold jewellery above can easily be cleaned to using the same method boiling water, washing up liquid and household ammonia put into a pot which you will only use for cleaning your jewellery.
Unlike white gold which tarnishes yellow over time platinum stays white but over time will dull in colour. This can be restored to its original shining beauty by posting into David Ashley or by booking an appointment so you can leave your item with our trained professionals who can re-polish the piece of jewellery and dip it into a solution called rhodium where electricity is passed through the liquid to restore its beauty.
Jewellery with gemstones need extra care when cleaning; for example, although diamonds are the strongest gemstone if two diamonds were to rub against each other they could leave a scratch or worst if in a solution with other gemstones they could also damage them very easily as other gemstones are not as strong.

Using an Ultrasonic Machine to Clean Your Jewellery
Ultrasonic machines are a really good way of cleaning jewellery as the machine sends ultrasonic waves to vibrate the dirt free from the jewellery. There are two types of ultrasonic machines available, the first is for home use and the second is used by jewellery manufacturers to make sure their jewellery items are as clean as possible before sale.
Home use ultrasonic machines are not very effective. Cleaning your jewellery how we have explained above is just as good as an ultrasonic machine for home use without the added cost. The other problem with home use ultrasonic machines is that some can cause gemstones to become loose in their settings or even damage other items that could be in the machine at the same time.
Our tip of the day is to stick with the methods above or let one of our trained experts clean it for you.

Keeping your Jewellery Safe
Make sure when you are not wearing your jewellery it is always kept separate from one another as this helps your jewellery from getting any unnecessary scratches or possibly damage one another. We recommend keeping them in their original boxes for extra safety.
We also recommend taking out insurance on your jewellery items as you can never be too careful. We recommend using our partners’ Primasure as they are fairly priced and also, they always try and go that extra mile if something was to ever happen. Call them today on 01702 209 511 and quote David Ashley as a reference.
